Just when they’d taken down their last “Colored Only” sign… the Southern Mississippi University band just set the state back about 50 years.
During last nights game against Kentucky state, the Southern Miss band members thought it would be comical to chant , ‘Where’s your green card” as K-State’s Angel Rodriguez approached the free throw line in the first half of last night’s game.
Well…lets be clear on 2 things:
1. In no way, shape or form are racist remarks funny and/or cute. Even if it is accompanied by a 30 person band.
2. Angel Rodrigez is Puerto Rican. Last time we checked, Puerto Rico was still apart of the United States and has been since around 1917. So, ummm….he doesn’t quite qualify for a Green Card seeing as how he’s a U.S. citizen. Smart asses.
In attempts to clean up the mess, Southern Miss President Martha Saunders released a statement on the incident apologizing to Rodriguez.
“We deeply regret the remarks made by a few students at today’s game. The words of these individuals do not represent the sentiments of our pep band, athletic department or university,” said Saunders. “We apologize to Mr. Rodriguez and will take quick and appropriate disciplinary action against the students involved in this isolated incident.”
Yea…..sure.
